Quick answer

For a covered hail claim, your immediate out-of-pocket exposure is generally your hail-specific deductible. A Class 4 roof may reduce future damage and may qualify for better policy terms, but only your insurer can confirm the discount, deductible and coverage.

What the postal-code result means.

This tool uses a published 2026 insurance-data signal; it does not manufacture a neighbourhood probability.

Calgary's published Extreme FSAs

T2X, T2Y, T3J, T3K, T3N, T3P and T3R were listed as Extreme for wind and hail by Rates.ca. The source says its FSA ratings are based on proprietary data from an insurance data, analytics and technology provider.

Not listed does not mean low risk

If your prefix is not in that Extreme list, the calculator reports exactly that—nothing more. Rates.ca says wind and hail risk is High for most Calgary postal codes. A three-character FSA also cannot assess your individual roof, lot or coverage.

Turn the result into action

Three conversations to have before renewal.

Read the hail terms

Confirm whether hail is included, optional or restricted; find the hail-specific deductible; and ask whether roof claims pay replacement cost or depreciated value.

Price the upgrade gap

Ask a qualified roofer for comparable standard and certified Class 4 options. Use the price difference—not the whole roof quote—in the calculator.

Get terms in writing

Ask the insurer which products, proof and installation records qualify for any discount or deductible change. Recalculate with the written figures.

Class 4, in plain language

More impact resistance—not a force field.

What to verify

The City of Calgary's resilient-roofing checklist says Class 4 systems should meet UL 2218 or FM 4473 and be installed as a complete rated roof system. Confirm the exact product, system rating, warranty and installation requirements before signing.

Why installation matters

Impact-resistant materials can still be damaged by severe hail. Deck condition, underlayment, flashing, fastening and manufacturer instructions all affect performance. Keep invoices, product details and photographs for the insurer.

Calgary hail insurance FAQ

Short answers before you make a roof decision.

Is this a hail forecast or a home-insurance quote?

No. It is an educational planning calculator. It does not predict a storm, inspect a roof, price a policy or replace advice from an insurer, broker or qualified roofing professional.

Which Calgary postal-code prefixes have an Extreme wind and hail signal?

Rates.ca's 2026 Calgary page lists T2X, T2Y, T3J, T3K, T3N, T3P and T3R as Extreme for wind and hail. Its scores use Forward Sortation Areas—the first three characters of a postal code—and proprietary insurance data.

What is a hail deductible?

It is the amount you are responsible for on a covered hail claim before the insurer's payment. Check your policy: a hail-specific deductible can differ from the general deductible, and coverage terms vary.

Can Class 4 shingles lower home-insurance costs in Alberta?

Some insurers may offer a premium discount or a different hail deductible for recognized impact-resistant roofing. Industry reporting in 2026 cited discounts of 5–10%, but eligibility and savings vary by insurer and policy.

Does a Class 4 roof prevent all hail damage?

No. Class 4 is an impact-resistance rating, not a damage guarantee. Large or wind-driven hail can still cause damage, and product choice, roof condition and installation quality matter.

Why use the upgrade cost instead of the full roof price?

When comparing a standard replacement with a Class 4 replacement, the useful investment figure is the extra amount charged for the Class 4 option. Enter the full price only when there is no standard replacement cost to subtract.

Was Calgary's $3,000 resilient-roofing rebate still open in 2026?

No. The City program ended in May 2022. Do not include that rebate in your calculation unless a new, current program is independently confirmed.

What should I ask at renewal?

Ask whether hail is included, what the hail deductible is, how roof claims are settled, whether age-based depreciation applies, and what documents are required for a Class 4 discount or deductible change.
